I think if you are riding a bike it doesn't matter:

What sort of bike you ride

What you wear or how long your socks are

How you ride

What style or era of parts are on your bike

It's that sort of elitist crap above that puts people off of trying cycling. Then we moan the sport/hobby is in decline. I don't like carbon and many other modern things, but it's progress and there's no point whinging about it. It will happen sadly whether we like it or not. I ride friction, it's what I learnt on, that and fixed wheel. Does that mean I see no room for improvement. Of course not.
