Riser bars on Retro ride

riser bars where the norm on mtb in the early-mid 80s and never were really dead so period correctness is certainly not an issue. if it feels right it IS right. heck, i even have a riser bar AND bar ends on my daily rider.

just as example a 1985 Mountain Klein

Got flat bars on the '91 Yo and it looks right. Risers on the '98 KK. The KK is a more comfortable ride because of the risers (yeah, my back aches too!), got a coupla stackers and a 5 deg stem fitted, it suits it too having a sloping top tube. If it had flat bars I think it would look great too but it would need a loads of stackers/high rise stem to prevent the brake levers smacking into the TT in the event of a crash. It's my main ride so I have to think about that possibility. Also (IMO) with that lot on it would look darn silly.

Garage queen or pootling around the park fit the flats.

Not sure about the BMX analogy Jon, because it's a totally different riding position but agree it's a personal thing - fit what you're happy with and sod 'em! :D

Thanks for the replies fellas. great response.. Just been respraying a set of club roost bars for a test.. wanted to get out over next day or two to try them, but looks like I will need a dingy not a bike due to the cra* weather up here at the mo  the other thing I am thinking is do I go carbon or alloy, would love some Ti ones but rare and costly..

Just when I thought the IBIS was done.. I find something else to fettle with...

I've used the Easton ally risers and found that they transmitted a little trail buzz on certain surfaces and made my fingers go a bit tingly. The Easton carbon Monkeylites cured that. Not too keen on Easton's latest batch of carbon risers though, the logo looks sh1te (IMO) and you can't see the carbon weave any more so looks a bit 'plasticy' (my mate just bought some and wasn't too chuffed about that).

Agreed I had some EC90 CNTs on the Modern rig (Sold Now  ) and the older (replaced) EC90 SLs looked much nicer.. (real carbon) I understand and can appreciate the different feel in the types of material , and Ideally I would like Ti Risers , but think that Carbon would suit better from a 'feel' point of view , but its just the look of carbon on this bike, I have tried so hard not to put any carbon on it.. :) but its getting some alloy ones, that weigh about the same as carbon.. :?

I remember my first bike, the Raleigh Mustang had a short stem and riser bars back in 87 ish ? Then it all went swan-neck stems and flat alloy bars so I quickly upgraded  funny how it's all gone full circle...

Rise

Some shots of LP Composites on my '97 Alibi... have some White Bros Ti's on a Kona that look okay too. They seem to work better with a sloping top tube IMHO.
