Ringle freehub question - odd one and cant work it out

I bought a lovely red superbubba rear hub, got the wheel built up and collected it this last week, I bought a shimano 8 speed cassette and it is very tight, in fact it might go on with a rubber hammer but I stopped at that point. I then tried the back section of an old shimano 9 speed cassette and it slid on without a problem.

I want to fit 8 speed to match shifters. So for now havent done anything more.

I'm confused? Am I being thick? I thought the interface was the same but the spacing different between 8 and 9 speed?

Turned out to be a faulty batch of shimano cassettes. I took a tiny bit off the internal metalwork.. A real small bit, just the edge and it dropped in pretty smoothly. Weird.

Bet you're glad you didn't modify it with the rubber hammer!

Very glad.. Initially I started to tap it on, then stood back and engaged brain and tapped it off again. Phew!
