Rim wear, is this too much?

Hello,

I am currently rebuilding and upgrading a few parts on a lovely 1995 rockhopper, I’m coming to the end of the project and am now working on the wheels.

I have a question regarding the brake tracks on these Araya 26x1.5 rims, I have held a straight edge to the rim and can see a slight amount of concave to the surface. Now to my untrained eye they don’t seem to be too bad and “hopefully” still have some life in them as I am not in a position to be buying a new wheelset at the minute.

Some model Arayas were built concave. Check the archive on here to see if yours are some.

Which Araya rims are they, this could well be one of their technologies, depending on year. Campag did similar.
It looks normal.

They are the Araya 26x1.5 HE GP-710, was that a full picture you wanted uploaded sorry?

Old school Arayas were built strong so I wouldn’t worry too much.
The RM400 were concave but markedly so, like the Camap Ataks and sthenos. Yours don’t look like they were made that way as the curve is uneven and not marked

Yes you are probably right no that I have a feel it definitely doesn’t feel as though it would have come from the factory like this. I’ll go ahead and assume they are safe to ride then at least until I find something to replace them when I have a little more money to spend on the build!

That is ok, but you can measure the thicknes with a caliper. Normal wear, next time don´t brake and will last for ever

And I say it is wear because it is not uniform. But can be what other people have said.

Most of the range at the time was concave, some quite subtle, often a flick near the tyre edge of the rim.

But this rim ( new for 1993) was one of the few not designated concave.

The plan now is give these brake surfaces a good clean, any recommendations? I was planning to wipe down with some isopropyl. Going to get some new, either Swiss stop or Koolstop soft pads to further minimise wear for the foreseeable.
