How does it ride? I have been told it's a bit harsh?
It rides really well, I would have said lively rather than harsh.

I have found that 853 can be harsh, especially if the rear end has been designed for a heavier rider, but my Diabolo is great fun to rattle along the trails on.

Thanks. I've just bought one so I guess I'll find out soon. I've got a campag mirage triple to put on her. Really looking forward to building her and giving it a blast.

A Diabolo?

Brilliant bike, lots of fun with a real personality. I really should ride mine more.

No sorry, I meant a 731. Mine is a Mike Grey frame set.
This post need pictures.

I'll be interested to hear how 731 is when used on a road frame, spanky I reckon.

How does 731 ride?

Highly subjective but, for what it's worth, here are my thoughts. I have a lot of steel bikes, all a little bit different. I use the Bob Jackson 731 for long rides like LEJOG because it's comfortable, responsive, quick and light. It does not have a harsh ride. 653 and 753 both feel little bit firmer to me, especially the forks, but both are quick, and get used a lot. 531 Pro feels the most comfortable of the lot, certainly not as stiff as any of the above, but gets the least use. Also have a Dolan Dedacciai, heavy, unusual shaped tubes, fast and responsive on the flat and phenomenally stable on long descents - a joy on hills like Ventoux and Alpe d'Huez this summer. My favourite steel? 753, followed by 731.
