the yst self tightening bottom bracket is a good idea though , only about a tenner retail too . although they should idealy be fitted after the shell has had a conical taper faced to fully support it

The YST's are good, but perhaps not ideal for a tandem?

Have used the l/h BSc cup trick before with some success- agree not ideal, but the only way i can think of getting the bike rideable without having to take it to the shop.

Thanks to everyone for their views. Due to the scarcity of parts I've decided to keep the BB's but change the axles for shorter ones. Does anyone know where I could get some?

a quality old bike shop will have some in a drawer somewhere . they can still be had new so i guess any shop will be able to order them but an older well established place will make sure you walk out with the right one

make sure they are shorter on the end from where the bearings sit with the cups and not in the center . you dont want to buy one thats shorter but on the wrong end
