Its been a tough week. Muchoss dollars going out to pay for wedding stuff, and my poor, poor Zaskar build is stalling badly. No latter how long I look at shiny bike bits they just don't get cheaper or free! :(

So on my way home from work I popped into a small local garage I rent. I knew I had some bike bits stashed away and hoped a few early 2000 XT bits might be hiding in a box somewhere.

I rummaged around my garage and found an unmarked box. I was stunned when I opened it, contained within were early 90's parts I thought I'd sold a very long time ago. 'WIN'
These are the original parts I took off my Bonty about 5 years ago. I'd assumed I'd sold them on when I flogged all the other Bonty bits! :D

So check out my treasure. :)

I'm made up! :D
Although I'm not sure much of it is of any use to me. I'll definitely be using the UN71 as I can put that back on the Bonty and try and fit a proper road chainset.
I was hoping to use the XTR rear mech on my Zaskar but I'm assuming these early 90's 7spd mechs won't work on a 9spd setup?

...and I found my early 2000 XT bits. 'Yay'

:D treasure..........i find bits at my parents house now and again, great when that happens.

Might be in the market for the smokes - are you up for selling them and if so how much do you want ??

They're what I had on my Stumpy BITD

Thanks
Simon

Unfortunately there is only one Smoke which is a shame as a pair of them would have been something special :)

XTR 7 speed mech should work with a 9 speed cassette as a 9 speed is the same width as an 8 speed which is only one cog more than a 7 speed. The adjustment range of the mech should allow for this and the indexings taken care of by the shifter not the mech. Keep it and use it ;)

There never was a '7 speed' XTR mech, they started at '8 speed' so have always used the narrow jockey wheels. The only alteration to a '9 speed' mech would be the lack of the extra tooth on the jocky wheels, so cannot wrap as much chain, and the swing profile may not be as accurate, but stick to a 12-28/32 range and it'll be fine, though 11 tooth sprocket works just fine as well as 15+ years have shown, might not be quite so 'perfect'.
