Traders always say sell before the market peaks. IMO it did so around 6months ago. We are all getting older, riding a bit less, paying for kids etc The next vanguard will be late nineties and noughties retro builds.

Think you might actually be on to something there. What's retro for some isn't for others and each generation will have it's own idea of what fits in to their nostalgia.

Maybe the late 80's, early 90's mob (which we seem to predominantly be) have had their go and the interest has peaked and will continue to decline? Those that are interested in that period have on the whole been down memory lane with many now happy to move on to the next time/money drain? It will rise again in some form and possibly through this site but will be focused on what the 'generation' of the time remember. Say stuff that is just old kit now, early 2000's full suss and the like. In 5/10 years time that will be the desirable gear as people try to relive their youth, just as we have. Most of it is just 'old modern rubbish' now.

I could also be talking bollox mind.

I think there might be a bit of that, but if that is the case why is it not happening with the BMX scene? :?

Those guys are mostly of the same era, i.e. had a BMX as a kid and MTB as a teen or young adult. But the prices of their stuff seems really crazy. Why would older age, kids etc affect one branch of cycle nostalgia and not another very closely related one?

Maybe they took better drugs  or the brain damage from sustained stunt riding means they don't care if the house gets repossessed as long as they get that £2k Cook Bros crank

Re:

Is there also a strong trend towards British builds with less esoteric criplingly expensive US import parts ?

Seems the MTB for sale section has pretty much stalled at the moment. Compared to a year ago things were flying out!

Anyone got any theories/explanation ?

Strangely I feel like I have come in late to the party. Whether this is a good, bad or irrelevant thing is hard to say. What I do know is that so far I am building up the stuff that I want - either to get back bikes I've lost over the years or ones I fancied, and it's not costing me much: this is a good thing for me. I am wondering if I might change my interests ( I have always been interested in cycling one way or another, just not always active due to health concerns) from my current budget/midrange stuff up to the more esoteric bikes out there. Either way, there's a lot of info and expertise here and I am grateful for it. It does seem sad that it seems to be slowing down: even I have seen it busier, but I have seen the same thing in other forums ( fora? ) and it has seemed to be cyclical. I hope it is here too :)

And yeah, I think FB may be having an effect - unfortunately I think although it's useful, it does tend to encourage quick and less useful posts - many of them unhelpfully fatuous and/or combative. Any discussion here seems much more in depth a lot of the time. ( Also less whinging, hating, swearing, moaning, grumping and in-fighting. )

Re:

I think these things go in cycles
I haven't been on much for the last year or so but then of a sudden the enthusiasm peaks again.

But it is very quiet ... Or rather devoid of much activity

you've only got to look at some of the photos on this very site to see how much bling some folk have stashed away

I resemble that remark.

Doctorstewie – you may well be right and we probably joined the party well after the wave had crested. I only stumbled across Retrobike out the blue whilst bored when I was at home bored recovering from a bad injury and surfing the net. I'd just been reunited with my old Clockwork after 16 years and it needed a refurb. I was wondering if any still existed and was trying to source any information I could find about Oranges, and there they all were on RB. Wow! I am hugely grateful for the collective knowledge of Retrobike and for rekindling my love of cycling and for getting me back on old bike.

Ever heard of causing your own demise with negative talk ? :?

Threads like this cause people to lose confidence.

Even if I have to take a crash course in website hosting - Retrobike will be here as long as I am around even if it is just me left, in my shed, dribbling a bit trying to fix a 200GS rear mech.
