Weren't we saying the same thing this time last year?

Yep, I think I started the thread. It's got worse IMO and I have no reason to change my opinion that retro bikes are going the same way as retro radio controlled did 10ish years ago.

A decline in interest..? I guess for some it's about scratching an itch; that Bike you never had, you can now have etc. and once that itch is scratched..

I'm pretty much resigned to not selling the two Saracens I have on Ebay, boxing them up, and hanging on to them! They're certainly not going to land me a stack of cash if they do sell..

I seem to be having a Build Frenzy at the moment.. Three on the go!

I think we might find that interest in Vintage Mtbs has increased in the last year its just that the access points for the hobby have grown as well. I came to this site 2+ years ago because there wasn't too much else around and my German is poor at best these days.

Now you can participate in hobby in many other ways online. If you want to sell your vintage gear you also have more avenues to sell. This is site isn't the only game in town anymore. I think we'd find more people than ever messing with vintage mtbs these days ... maybe just not on here.

The growth in Asia is nuts ... its catching up with Germany!

Canada is still a bit of a mystery. Especially Ontario. We love MTBs, but the amount of people involved in vintage mtbs is pretty sparse considering. I suppose that's great for the few that collect like me. We are still getting those XTR bikes for peanuts because people don't know what they have.

The same conversation comes up every year ;-) In summary:

It's the spring/summer. Less building + more riding = fewer posts
Over-saturation of the market, retro is trendy
Quality of the market, less quality, more tat

And for a lot of us, we've got what we want and now we're chasing unicorns...

Agree and disagree.

Nothing to do with the time of year IMO, the market has been flat and the site noticeably quieter for over a year solid.

Over-saturation possibly but not really on here. Defo more people trying to run it as a business though and that spoils some of the fun. Same happened in retro r/c to the point that hardly anything made it to market unless being sold by one or two traders. Once they got the market to themselves the prices went through the roof meaning what used to be a cheap fix wasn't anymore.

Quality of the market? Not sure as there's plenty of great bikes out there but many have already been restored and the prices for the best have got to silly levels IMO. Defo plenty of tat out there but less interesting tat.

Defo agree with the last point. Had most of what I wanted, don't especially want them again and the ones I still want either don't show up or are too expensive. Anyone see a mint 1992/3 silver/grey Orange Clockwork with classic decals let me know. ;) I think they must have only sold three of them!

Re:

The place hasn't slowed down, Its fallen off a cliff edge!

I have no idea why this would be, but it's very odd... on the up side, I'm still here. :D

Let's face it most of the stuff is mass-produced so there is little that is truly rare. I see less people wanting STX stuff compared to a year or two ago. Probably a fair few of us have built that rarer machine that we wanted when we first got into the sport and discovered it rode no better than our Cinder Cone (or whatever). Many of us have expanded out and discovered road bikes...

In short, things change and fads burn themselves out, leaving the lasting enthusiasts behind.
