The establishment of 'experts' and 'proper ways to do things' puts a lot of people off. What was light hearted fun becomes far too serious, with all sorts of people crawling out of the woodwork to publicise themselves and make money rather than have a laugh.

Good points. There's nothing worse than self-appointeds pronouncing on regulation this and that.

Once upon a time, in 1993, mountain biking was a minority sport and everybody did XC style riding. Then in 1994 or 1995 it seemed like everybody wanted a decent mountain bike, but the new influx subverted the scene due to being less interested in proper mountain biking and fitness, but into MTBs more for fashion and being seen to do an extreme sport.

Now that the MTB scene is waning again, with the fair weather MTBers and fashionistas going over to road bikes, then I say good. Give us proper mountain bikers back our scene, and well keep riding in the wilds whatever the season, on bikes that can work in mud without needing an expensive service after each ride.

Yes, I do have rose tinted monocles on!

If the Isle of Wight TT(that's what mrs HM called it ) is anything to go by what with an electric bike that can average almost 120mph for the lap, I want assisted technology on my cooker.

Set this up and for some reason didn't get any email notifications of replies so I assumed even this section had gone quiet!

Lots of interesting theories here, good to read all the replies. Wasn't trying to put a curse on the Scene but was just curious why it had gone quiet. I'm relatively new here (2+ years and probably the value of a small family hatch back it outlay on parts!) Never want to add it up!!! but I know when I joined, quality bits were flying out instantly. You had to almost stalk the For Sale section to reply to and secure a bit..

I personally like collecting the lovely CNC, anodised bits or the stuff that just isn't made as well these days. I love the mid to late 90's era, the handmade frames and the vivid graphics. Ashamed to say I'm yet to finish a build yet but it will come (keep telling myself that)

Met some cracking people on here, ishaw and elite (Nick) to name a couple.

I do hope it picks up, I'm sure it will, it's like anything, it will go in phases of popularity. Interested to see if the 2000- 2005 era will gain momentum soon as people get older.

Anyway, cheers for all the replies, I know I am hooked and will be on here for a while yet...

It all started with one eBay click after I saw a 97 Satin bear valley in the park and I thought ' I wonder how much they are these days...'. Disaster....

Interesting thread and one which crops up on a more or less annual basis.

Things change and move on for a myriad of reasons. Some mentioned here I'm sure, some not.

One thing which doubtlessly effects all fora and similar sites in the rise of faceboook and other social media.

As an interesting aside the site in bringing in greater traffic than it did back in what many would consider the glory days of the late 2000s.

Anyhow retrobike is dead - long live retrobike!

I dabble in vintage die-cast toys too and the same things are happening...

Space and time restrictions have dictated that a lot of my 'projects' have been passed on to fellow Retrobikers who have turned my ugly ducklings into swans (you all know who you are!), still have a couple of Retro rides, by simplifying my collection I can focus more....and actually ride them too
