Is this not since the tour de France last year?
Riding all day on an MTB and an hour cleaning should hardly be a deterrent!
As for wrecking bikes? Should be out riding more to improve ;-)

No it's been longer, Chris Hoy and the success of team GB, Froomey, Sky etc and the bad weather over here these days, if you road off road, all day in the wet around here, with all the flints and sharp sand, you wouldn't have a drivetrain left and your downtube would be chipped bare, regardless of how "good" a rider you are.
The local road clubs are seeing soaring numbers and like it or not Carbon will dominate the frame material scene for the "foreseeable" it's just so strong and light and comfortable and prices are tumbling as scale of manufacture increases. Steel Alloy and Ti just can't compete with carbon, too heavy and flexy.

2011, road bikes were out selling MTB by a big margin.

As long as people are cycling?

Plenty of retro road around!

Many of the roads now resemble trail centre tracks now
