Retro to modern

Re:

I really like the XO 9 speed shifters and 1x is cool but kinda pointless on a vintage bike. Well at least in my opinion.

Going 1x on a vintage bike is kinda neutering it. They are capable of so much speed you need 2-3 front rings.

I've though about it but I use my vintage bike mostly on pavement and find myself big ring and the 3 highest gears in back most of the time on flat roads.

But the 9 speed XO shifters are SO much better than what I've used before, highly recommended. Friend liked em so much he put one on his '19 Commencal DH bike.

Not really.

Unless you ride on the road, a lot, as you do. In which case, moderns are equally as capable (maybe more so with modern tyres/29er wheels). And 1x is fine for that, but you have wider range cassettes.

I've done a 1x10 conversion to a v-braked 26" bike. Personally i didn't like it as the range was a bit restrictive as i could only get an 11-36 cassette at the time, with the 11-42 that are available now (and bigger with 11/12 speed) i'd have no worries doing it again.

Best to look at a ratio calculator though to work out whats going on with current set up and what you'll loose, if anything. (top end, bottom end, ratio steps.)
