Retro Ronde van Vlaanderen foreplay

I've done the full RvV a few times, so riding it on my Gios resplendent in a Brooklyn jersey would make it a nice challenge - not sure I'd stick with the old Duegi shoes though. I expect all the hotels around Ninove and Gerardsbergen will be fully booked by now, but there's plenty of options around Bruges from my experience. Also gives the chance to see the riders sign-on on Sunday.

RvV - what's the best way to organise this?

Guys.

I'll take a couple of bikes - my 80s SBDU and maybe something like my 40s Hetchins fixed or my 70s Holdsworth Professional.

Fortunate to have a bike hauler - old classic Volvo estate so can carry plenty, bikes, tools - inside, on roof...

I'd love to do this - good objective for 2011, do L'Eroica in 2012.

Thanx for reading this,

Roadking.

Just noticed that it is the weekend after Mountain Mayhem so possible to do both - if I can get a double weekend pass!

If I do go I will probably take my '58 Pennine with 27" HP's and nice wide fat tyres to cushion the pave. Built for comfort not for speed. I'll also have to try and fit some lower gearing, 47 x 24 doesn't sound low enough to me. 44 x 28 sounds much better :D

The retro event sounds just the ticket for me, only problem is Mrs Mavesyn likes the sound of it too.

I like Volvos, but I have a bike hauler of another Swedish make: a 900 classic combi coupe. I should probably take a couple bikes with me too. Next to the Peka or Reus something like a Capri Sonne Koga FullPro or PDM Concorde. The later is maybe a little new for the race, but would do well as concours piece or the long ride the other day. The 2010 program mentions there was a concours de elegance kind of event on the Saturday. I would expect it would be more or less the same for 2011.

Right guys, we're in 2011 so need to be thinking seriously about this. I've got a weekend pass so is there anyone from Yorkshire/Lincs who will be going from Hull? I'd rather not go on my own, it will (should!) be more fun in a small group and meet up with other RB'ers there. Accomodation needs to be looked into pretty quick - and I need a new passport!

Let's get this one sorted! :D

Hi Ned/Guys,

I could be good for this, although going from Hull?! How do we travel there, I've got a large Volvo wagon...could take three (inc me) plus bikes quite easily...costs shared, laughs doubled.

If there is enough interest we ought to meet to discuss - forum ok but I've organised trips such as this before: Barcelona and Athens Olympics, TdF etc...can't beat a face to face commitment - everyone says yes, but when it comes to booking tickets it all goes quiet!

Ned, perhaps we could discuss when I come up to get my frames sorted?

Roadking.

Hello all,

I'm English but I live in Leuven, Belgium. For anyone arriving the day before,
I would love to show you round some of my local terrain, as well the Ronde itself.

The area round Leuven is not so different from the area round Oudenaarde-Geraadsbergen, with some short hills and quite a few kasseien/pave. Some classics take place there and the TDF came through last year. I can put together a longish route including all the local climbs.

Perhaps we might all want to go down to Wallonia. Again, I know a couple of decent routes and it's not that hard to get there.

Accomodation is a bit difficult, does seem like a lot of local stuff is booked up already. But everything in Belgium is pretty close by, so you might want to try Gent, Leuven, Brugge etc. I'd avoid Brussels, though - miserable to drive in.

Those getting the ferry to Zeebrugge can easily drive down to Oudenaarde, via the E40 and E17 motorways.

I did the 75km route last summer and it's not too taxing, although the cobbles take it out of you a bit.
I'll probably take a bike I bought in Antwerpen. It's a George Pintens -
a retired coureur who turned to building bikes right after the end of his career. Not a super flash bike but it's definitely Belgian!

Cheers,

Johnny

PS, weather is also a consideration.

For those planning to go in April, it's much more likely to be very rainy
than in June, so you end up looking like those pictures of Freddy Maertens
covered in mud. A more authentic RVV experience...
