Had a think about this a bit more.
How about finding something from the tip that is made with a pressed steel horizontal drop-out - BSO / cheap bike or even a kids bike. Cut the drop-out with the hanger, file it all square, drill and tap the steel drop-out, bolts on the inside of the two-bolt Simple drop-out. It could look a tidy job.

Maybe he's off peddling Franny in a state of bliss or got lost on the way to the shed?
Me thinks before any cutting bending chopping drilling and tapping some thought to what size cassette and type of derailleur is going to be used....anything that sticks out further than the dropout face is robbing the derailleur of travel

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll stick to my current hanger, but need to decide whether to drill an extra hole in the dropout (what can possibly go wrong?) or find another way to stick it on (gaffer tape?).
One bolt might be enough - the hanger's tang goes flush against the dropout and will act as an extra point of support.
Surely, this world has seen worse crimes done to dropouts...
