Retro Discs!

Okay I know disc brakes are a bit new-skool but i need some advice!

Seeing as my new toy (Yeti AS-3) has a disc mount (and I also have a set of forks with a disc mount and no brake bosses) I thought I'd try to find some retro discs for this build.

The seller says that the mounts are 'Hayes' type.

What does this mean and what brakes would anyone suggest?

I dont know a great deal, well nothing to be honest, about disc brakes, but my Avalanche has Avid Juicy 3 disc brakes and no matter WHAT the weather they work amazingly well

Mud, dust, water, they dont bat an eyelid.

However, until I read the handbook and learn a little more, I would be worried about servicing them myself.

I can HIGHLY recommend disc's as an upgrade.

I've also got a Hayes mount on the rear but not that many calipers actually fit them. A2Z components do a Hayes-->IS adaptor and usually be bought from eBay. I've yet to get one myself so I can't guarantee it'll work, but it's a better option that waiting a few years for a Hayes disc brake set to come around...

Pic of the chainstay Hayes mount Hope C2 pro's on my Trek 8900 - the wrong side to see much

From what I remember this is a Hope No1 Caliper with a Hope adapter. Last time I spoke to Hope spares were still available which means pretty much any Hope C2 could be pressed into service. I've also seen caliper halves on ebay.

The hayes to IS adapters work very well. Had one on a set of manitous for ages, think it's still on them although the forks are sitting in the cupboard. If I get a spare minute I'll dig them out and take a photo of the adapter. For a retro choice I'd go for Hope C2 brakes. Come up on ebay fairly regularly, spares are still available and they work very well. Other options would be early hayes or formula.

We have a used Hayes-Mount Caliper at work, if you're interested. (the one you need for the rear)

I figure, if you wanted it, I could set something up for $25 Shipped from the USA.
