Dirt Disciple
So I’ve found this Scapin Atec frame in allegedly SLX tubing in size 51/52 on eBay, during Covid “fever”, wanting to keep myself busy. I was always intrigued by the brand and their frames, honestly I would’ve loved one of their Barco generations, or late ‘90s racers, but those are impossible to find in my small size.
The paint looked pretty knackered but the chrome and frame in top condition. It had an old SLX badge on the downtube, barely readable, looking through the seat tube, I notice some “rifling” towards the BB, though not sure how are they supposed to look, fingers crossed it’s genuinely SLX tubing.
Component wise, the vision was/ is early ‘90s racer with Campagnolo Record 1gen. Ergopowers.
After fiddling with different configurations, I decided on a new paint job, new hand built wheels with modern rims, new bars, chain rings but used shifters. So it’s not 100% vintage bike with vintage components, I wanted the more secure feel of modern rims.
Paint done locally, in Germany where I live by Schoen Paints, decals made by hand with silver outlines;
Component list:
Scapin Atec SLX;
Groupset Campagnolo Record Titanium 8 speed, 53/39 paired with 13-26 cassette;
Wheels NOS Record 28h front hub, Record 32h rear, laced with DT Swiss Aerolite spokes on to H Plus Son Archetype silver rims;
Challenge Strada 25 new tires (a pain to install!);
Finishing kit, Record aero 27mm seatpost, Cinelli XA 110mm stem, new Cinelli Giro d’Italia 40cm bars;
Pictured is with a Turbo saddle but now changed to the preferred San Marco Regal;
Enjoy!
