Old School Hero
So we were visiting friends in N Lanarkshire when I spotted a forlorn sight, leaning against a fence in a neighbour’s garden. What caught my attention were the Rockshox Judy XC forks, which I remember from the mid 90’s. These were attached to a Marin Pine Mountain, I’ve never owned a Marin and know practically nothing about them, other than they’re a venerable brand.
Quick chat with the student/owner, who was about to throw it out, and the bike’s now sitting in my garage. Apparently he’d owned it for a couple of years, been given it by his g’friend’s grandfather … house-move forces disposal etc…
TBH I don’t need another bike in the family, however I couldn’t let this item just bite the dust.
I’ve enclosed pics of the bike as received. Condition is not great, dirty, neglected, some rust. Frame 20.5”. The suspension forks could present a problem: they don’t move up & down.
In theory maybe I can get the bike going again. I like the simplicity and ease of cantilever brakes, and 26” wheels, and 7 or 8 speed clusters. In addition, I like the comfort of front suspension and bar extensions
, there’s only so much jarring my hands and spine can take these days.
I’d be grateful to receive any thoughts or opinions from anyone on the bike? It came with one Araya VP20 rim & Exage hub, plus a full Exage group set (which I wasn’t expecting?), which all look to have been in place since new
. Rear wheel has been replaced.
Ritchey Logic headset, Rockshox Judy XC, Shimano Exage M320 175mm cranks, Kalloy seat post.
The Marin 1992 catalogue on Retrobike states a completely different set of components for the Pine Mountain, so what may have happened here? - is there any clue to its past from the pics?
The centre of the bottom bracket states 50 12E. Does the 12 indicate January 1992?
The Shimano F & R mechs are both stamped QD, and the cranks are stamped QF and QG, so this all ties in with 1992. Not sure about the date of the Judy forks.
Post Script: I nipped back to visit the former owner and left a bag of goodies as a thank-you, including some of the wife’s home baking.
