Retro Guru
Myself and fellow RB member Colin made the effort to hire a table and get up early for the cycle jumble at the National Cycling Centre on Sunday (www.bikecreche.co.uk) - a few observations from that on the state of selling retro parts ( I took a wide range of road and mtb, retro and recent items along)
What sold well :
moderate cost '90s, quality components like Deore DX (could have sold all of this many times over)
Thumb shifters ( lost count of people asking for these - any condition)
Cantilever brakes also in demand
cheap unused wheel sets and individual wheels, any size disc or rim brake
vintage saddles, nice saddles in general.
books on cycling and touring (wish I had taken more)
matching components - shifters with matching derailleurs 9, 10, 11 speed
anything £5 or less
what didnt sell so easily:
Frames no-one interested , "I have too many already" etc.
clothes - many other sellers had huge quantities at bargain basement prices
complete bikes - all the sellers said they had sold none
freewheels
2000 onwards components especially octalink/isis
high end exotic components only sold to the cognoscenti and collectors
smaller frames or complete bikes
please dont think I am moaning. I did very well selling thankyou and it was really nice to catch up with a whole host of very pleasant people from RB forums and smiley people in general. Overall, the seasoned sellers were indicating footfall was about 2/3rd down on what they were expecting/hoping for.
thanks to the organisers for a well prepared event with as great atmospheric venue, easy access and a very large number of sellers.
it was only £25 a spot ( 3m x 3m) and a great opportunity to clear out all those boxes and hoarded items taking up space, just need to find somewhere to sell a load of bikes next!
