Some of the older hopes had a habit of exploding flanges.......... (i had a couple do this, and have seen dozens more)

and FWIW the X517 seems to have a 540mm ERD, which is a fairly common size, you'd probably be able to get away with 539-541 with the current spokes, anymore and you *might* be into difficulties building, depending on the length of the actual spokes.

A quick google finds about half a dozen rims with an ERD in that range. From a few different manufacturers, with a range of prices.

Thanks a lot, that is very helpful. Say I were to go with a rim of different erd, for spoke length could I simply measure the existing spokes and add on the difference or would I have to go through the painstaking measurements and calculations?

IIRC, CRC used to have a system where if you told them what rims and hubs, spoke amounts, you had, they would send you the correct spokes

There are plenty of spoke length calculators on the internet - put in your hub and rim models and out pops a number.

But have a look for 540ERD rims first. The problem of spoke lengths will hopefully not arise.

And if you download spocalc.xls (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/rinard/spocalc.xls) page 3 has a list of near enough a thousand rims, of all types. About 30 of them between 539 and 541 mm. The only mavic rim that is still in production for rim brakes (XM117) is 541mm ERD. And is only €23.
