Have a 1" Bontrager composite rigid fork. Would like to swap out the steerer for a longer one, preferably threadless. If I go to a LBS, would they usually stock them? And do I need anything special, or any 1" steel steerer will do?

Have you tried the steerer swap thread on the site. You might be able to swap yours for the one you want and part with no cash?

Failing that, you might struggle at your lbs as most forks these days have pressed in steerers which you can't replace.

The crowns off RS1s are the same, but finding one with a non threaded steerer might be hard. Steerer off an older Zokes XC or Z1 may work, or you may have to press out a steerer from a Quadra/Mag.

This fork?

The crown should come out once the bolts are loosened. If not, use the coin trcik to spread the gap a little but evenly. Save the crown race collar and go shopping at the frame building suppliers like this

And here is the long list

yep, them the forks! ;) so can i use any old 1" diameter steerer for a clamp style crown, or are there different ones for different forks?

swap would probably be unpractical as the shipping cost would probably be about the same as getting a new one since i'm in Canada and most user swapping are in the UK.

yep, legs and steerer can be taken out of the crown after undoing the bolts. need to figure out how to get the crown race and crown race collar off. can i tap the steerer top with a mallet and use the crown to push the crown race/collar off, or is that not advised?

is it possible to use a bulge steerer for the crown race? or do i have to use a straight steerer and mount a crown race collar?

I think the collar should be fairly loose. Tap the steerer top lightly see if it budges. I would get the race off first if you can. The collar is Al and the wall is pretty thin underneath the race.

I don't think the bulge steerer will fit the crown.

If you sawed off the lip on the bottom, maybe...looks better suited for a Marzocchi. I think the bottom of the steere actually bulges out as well...hard to tell from the picture...but the Bontrager needs a straight tube and relies on the "shim" to provide a tight fit for the race. I think I have actually heard that they are a viable option for replacement on that brand.
