Refinishing black seatposts (Steel, XT, XTR)

Read this thread with great interest! Will be trying the Birch Wood Casey Gun Blue over the next week. Any further tips on prep, application or aftercare to achieve best results?? 👂

No more tips, just follow the Gun blue instructions carefully. There are several youtube videos showing the best way.

So I tried the bluing process this afternoon and the results are pretty disappointing but I think this is down to prep. My tatty M900 post was too far gone to save the black finish so I initially Scotchbrited the black surface off leaving what looks like an off silver anodised under coating.
As there were a couple of rust patches I took to wet sanding these back and gave the whole post a once over.
I wasn’t thorough enough to remove all the under layer so the result has come out quite patchy.
I think the only way is to either meticulously sand the post or have it soda blasted before applying the Bluing agent.
Hope it will darken up over night. The finish does easily scotchbrite back off so I will probably give it another crack.

I would definitely try again.

Make sure surface is extremely clean, and go for several generous coats. Just keep brushing it on, it will build up.
