Refinisher for 'clear lacquer' Tange Prestige Marin Frame?

Gurus!

I have a much loved Marin Team Issue Steel bike I'm keen to restore. Over the years she has acquired a goodly amount of scratches (and memories) but no dents or dings.

Are there professional frame refinishers out there that can 'copy' the original clearcoat/lacquered finish of this (beautiful!) frame? If I was to supply decals would they also lacquer them in?

And lastly what is the kind of ball-park cost for such a job?

Advice gratefully received.

Jeff

Hi mate, I've been after a similar thing for my Orange P7 and have had little luck with various companies.

http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... 47&start=0

Only ones I had joy with were the higher end firms like Mercian etc.. and they wanted a kings ransom just for a few coats of clear lacquer (around £140). Dossa on here, did up another P7 and had a company in Liverpool (C&G Finishers) spray his with lacquer and it didn't cost him a lot, but you'd have to get your frame up there of course which will add to the cost.

I don't know anything about your frame, but the nickel finish on mine was a concern to some sprayers as they were worried that any pre-treatment would affect the nickel and look rubbish when lacquered. I've just decided to stick with bare nickel/steel and see how I go, powdercoating will be my choice if and when I decide to get a coating done.

I know that doesn't help much, but maybe someone else will have a suggestion...... :D

Baromedic - cheers for that and the links - hmm trickier than I hoped! Like yours the frame is nickel coated and then lacquered. I'd love to get the bike A1 again though - it's a lovely thing to ride even now.

Need to decide whether to rebuild it with the Judy XCs it's been running for many years - or the original rigid Marin forks which I still have.Where do you stand on that with your P7?

Cheers,
Jeff

Jeez, I wouldn't know what to say, I'm going through a similar pickle now and I asked for advice on here about it. I've had a lot of helpful tips and the general consensus is that its personal choice (depending on how much off-road you do), and that you don't need suspension for off-road but it can help!!

I could leave mine with the rigid F7 fork and see how it goes, plus if I want suspension forks the 1" steerer kind of limits me somewhat in terms of what I can buy so if I want some I gotta wait for the right ones to crop up.

That or keep it as a kind of Sunday drive bike and get a newer one for more serious trips.... hmmmmmmm.

Good luck with your choice anyway mate, keep us posted!
