For the IF. No idea what is what now a days. Have on it some shagged Fire XCs which I guess are old hat now. Looking some something a little beefier. Can't be doing with changing tyres all the while so want something suitable for places like the Peaks/Lakes/Wales but also suitable in less rugged terrain. Any ideas?

The Guv after modern kit

I can recommend Schwalbe Nobby Nics, very good all-rounders that roll very fast. Or, be adventurous and fit a Nobby Nic to the front and a Racing Ralph on the rear. Magical combination that works really well even in the filth. You may look at the RR pattern and think it is a dry only tyre but believe me they really work well. You may need to adjust your normal tyre pressures to modern lower ones, typically 30 psi or even lower.

You do realise that every single post is going to recommend different tyres don't you John?

FWIW, I use Panaracer Cinders. I've got them in 1.95, 2.1 and 2.35 and depending on the terrain/conditions I swap them round for the best combination, apart from when its really muddy, when I fit Trailrakers.

Modern tyres .. for the guvnor  this is the demise of the site..   .... nothing to see guys move along

Skinny XC tyres I'd say Panaracer XC Pro.
Fat do most stuff I'd say Continental Mountain King in 2.2 though I use 2.4's.

For me both are good economical all rounders.

I've done a lot of experimenting with tyres this winter in the hope of finding something for my local trails which are rocky, rooty and can be quite muddy.

My findings are as follows..

Nobby Nics- got these on the Moots and they have been very good although they can lack bite on the wet rootier sections.

Conti Mountain Kings- good on the rocks and clear mud well but not tough enough. I split the sidewall on one and the carcasse collapsed on another. Roll pretty well and are very light.

Schwalbe Albert- cheap, fairly light and works well on the back. Holding up pretty well on the sharp rocks of Thrunton.

Kenda Nevegal Stick-E- currently looking mahooosive on the front of the Cotic and taking a real bashing. Super grippy on everything but very draggy on long fire roads although not as bad on Tarmac.

Kenda Blue Groove- Run these most of the winter as a front tyre and no complaints. Grips well and very good on all surfaces. these will be going tubeless on my new Yo Eddy up front.

Kenda Excavator- Had one on the rear to compliment the Blue Groove up front. Again very very good and light too. Tubeless ready which is a good bonus.

Maxxis High Roller- Heavy, very draggy. Grips well but not worth the trade off.

Sodding hell, didn't realise i've gone through so many tyres this winter

To sum up go for the Kenda's.

Maxxis High Roller.

I second that, probably the best all rounder tyre on the market and has been for years. I'm running narrow Maxxis Minions on my other bike too, again, great tyres. Maxxis all the way!
