Recommend me some late 70ies clincher rims

generally speaking sprint/tub rims were what were raced on. Fiamme were popular. I don't want to open a tub v clincher tyre debate PLEASE but I would personally suggest a clincher tyre for recreational riding as a puncture repair is just replacing a tube not a tyre. Fresh tripe.co.uk have some retro style rims 700 and 27 1/4 that are not cheap but look good certainly they would not look out of place on your 70s bike. And with double wall construction and stainless steel eyelets. Also a modern clincher rim will allow for folding tyres and higher pressures that will give you more scope for gum wall tyre selection. But then you've got the spokes I'd suggest stainless double butted DT or Sapim (others are available) plus the build which is going to mount up. My own personal opinion is that the fist place to put money is in the wheels but this needs to be balanced with budget. The common rim shape for 70s early 80s is box or slightly rounded corners just google Fiamme or Mavic Module MA2 images to get an idea. You could get your own spokes and just lace the wheel then take it to your LBS to finish? Go online for videos of this etc. Those Suntour Superbe Large flange hubs are very nice hubs and will look great built up. I really like Suntour and the VX and Cyclone are my favourite mechs etc. good luck with it all and perhaps post your experience to helps others. Look I'm not an expert on anything this is just my own view listen to others and Google search the rims to see what they'll look like. Like I say best of luck with it.

Just a comment on wheel building. Back in the 60s I was buying spokes greater than 100 gross lots (enough for 200+ pairs of wheels). I could lace up a wheel in 3 minutes, but decent wheels could take an hour or more to finish.

thanks guys, I guess it's either new old stock/vintage Mavic or Wolber to get the authentic look and for display purposes, and of course some good rim selection too for riding (when not using Tubs)
Or a new retro style TB14 rim which looks the part yet is modern and functions better (when not using my Tubs)

Don't forget that Superchampion had the Gentleman series of rims in the 70's that matched the Module E from Mavic. I have some with sky blue decals which are quite nice.

For new runs there is also the Velo Orange range.

I know this is about rims but has anyone had any experience with the new Suntour Sun XCD? Or know anything about them? Are they truely Suntour reincarnated or some Chinese or Taiwanese made run of the mill ?
