Ello,
I fancy trying these here flat pedal thingies. I use DX Spds at the moment, ( the ones with the cages ) and am used to being attached to the bike. Thing is I am doing a lot more trail centre stuff and most of my riding mates swear by the unclipped method of getting about.
Aside from V8 types, which seem popular, can you recommend something a bit unusual that won't cost a fortune? Poking at ebay it seems like a lot of modern flatties don't offer a great deal of foot support, or am I missing something? Either way, I would like something that will keep my feet on the pedals ( I live in fear of sliding off) and not be too boring. Any suggestions?

Any decent pin style flat pedal will work well if you have the right shoe, and I can't see past 5:10 shoes tbh. Freeriders are a great shoe.
I'm a fan of the old V8s. Cheap and do the job and you can get them in any colour to suit your build, but also like the Shimano saint pedals and Nukeproof elctrons and neutrons. The hope pedals look great but don't fit with the cheap criteria!

Re:

Shimano Saint MX80s - so far every bit as good as the MX30s they replaced. Quite a decent sized platform too.

I am also looking forward to fitting some recently acquired Law Moto X pedals. I don't think they are made any more - but most owners seemed to have scared by them so they go pretty cheap. Picked up a set for tenner from this very parish.

Re:

As has been written already, 5 10s together with anything from Shimano, Nukeproof or DMR is a well proven path. Weenies will like Welgo magnesium MG1s or DMR V6 at 320g to be different. Also checkout Superstar components site for great deals.

Dmr v8-v12 are great pedals Ive been running them for years, they are however on the smaller side. You could also look at the gusset slim jim pedals Im running a pair on my bmx and so far they seem pretty good.

Re:

Been using Saint pedals for about a year now, constant use & abuse and still going strong, plenty grippy enough as well.
Nukeproof electron/neutron seem to be good too.
As already mentioned, a decent pair of shoes will make a world of difference, 5-10 have a style to suit almost everyone, I have some Teva "Links" which I like a lot although I think they're discontinued, if I were buying shoes now I'd probably look at the Shimano AM41 shoes as well.

Re:

i have always used flats as said V8 V12 and saints are pretty cool.

I also like the mid school DX with the Dx cut out

on my current fave bike im using wellgo magnesium M1, really impressed at weight and strength of them, considerably lighter than aluminium versions of the above

i have never really needed the newer style larger platform lower profile pedals and never found pedal strikes to be an issue with any of the above pedals

Use Shimano Saints on my modern bike and DMR V12's on my more aggressive retro, no compliants for either. Not exotic or different but they are both common in use as they work.

Re:

Newer v12s are quite nice and good value for money. Larger platform as are my vaults. Hope f20s were a bit less 'sticky' but think they do different pin options now. Was using v8s with terror pins before.
Maybe check out HT pedals, do some real nice ones.
