Recommend me a tyre

Conti or Schwalbe here too.. very impressed with all conti tyres.. :) light weigh, good wear ratio., and for me , never had a problem with grip issues :)

I still like maxxis high rollers. come in folding 1.9's for light grippiness! fairly cheap too.

I find they roll fast and the edge grips v well when cornering.

I'm another one for the 1.8 XC Pro. Very fast, good grip. Not good on loose gravelly stuff, but then what semi-slick sort of thing is?

Cheers guys, think I'll go with the Panaracer XC Pro. But the 1.8 as I they will see road use as well. Chain Reaction are doing the 1.8 folding for less than £20 so seems like a bargain.

I think a trip to the shops is in order. All of the recommendations look pretty good. So I think I'll just go with my gut instinct when i see them for real. And then order them online for cheaper.

If you are going to go to a LBS to look at stuff at least give them the chance to price match a product with an online retailer. If we all did what you just suggested soon you'll reach the point where the only place you could try a new bike or fondle a tyre would be Helfrauds or JJB. :(

On a less high horsed note the Fire XC 1.8 tyres are my personal favorites all year round with Trail Rakers if I know the rout is going to be a real bog fest.

I always support my LBS if I can. And they are generally my first port of call. But Edinburgh despite being full of cyclists doesn't have a great range of shops. I have a couple I use as often as I can as they're run by nice guys but the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Operative have grabbed the market to a pretty huge degree in my opinion.

There seem to be lots of shops now where you can buy a bike no problem but can't find parts if they are slightly unusual. I went to nearly every shop in my local area looking for a non black headset and eventually got one in a BMX specialist. If I had wanted a black FSA I could have got one anywhere. Very frustrating at times trying to do the right thing.

I recently got some Panaracer XC Pro 1.8's. Been a great all round tyre

I did get mine from Halfords  But I got them for £10 each

My sentiments exactly. Wheelbase is my main LBS and they are a good shop for bikes, clothes and mechanics. But for its size, I think they have a very, very limited components selection.
