After wasting an afternoon trying to sort me gears out, I actually think I left the garage with it much worse than I started

So if you have made a proper pigs ear of something, What would you reccomend to get it back to a level playing start again. Bearing in mind if its adjustable I have prob adjusted it

Bascially I have left the damn thing with the chain sitting about 4 up from the smallest cog and it wont drop any further no matter what i seem to do. And on the up it will drop over the top

It seems to do a skipping kind of thing too, I thought it was a stiff chain link but after a while of looking and looking its actually the chain skipping off the lower pulley? :?

there are loads of videos on you tube showing how to do it,as a general rule the ONLY thing thats ever needs adjusting is the cable tension, unscrew it half a turn at a time until the gears index properly, the stop screws etc are all set before it leaves the shop and generally will never need adjusting.
it takes 30 seconds to adjust gears, not an afternoon

hmmm Its a new mech for the bike and looked like everything had been screwed in?? :?

disconnect the gear cable, let the mech drop down to the lowest sprocket, if it doesn't go to the smallest one undo the h screw till it does, the by hand pedal the bike assuming it's rear wheel is off the ground and with your other hand push the rear mech up to the largest sprocket the adjust the L screw clockwise until the chain no longer goes over the top of the cassette, then let the mech drop to the small sprocket again then makesure the shifter lever is clicked all the way down, pull the cable tight and re-attach it and secure the bolt, then check through the gears adjusting the barrel on the rear mech anti clockwise to make it shift up if it isn't going up the block with each click of the shifter.

does that make sense? :D

ahh if its a new mech then there will be more adjustments to do,i though you were just tweaking an existing mech, check you tube, they are great vids :)

Dave, is it a new chain? Do the jockey wheels look like something a ninja would use? If not, you need to adjust the two little screws at the back of the mech. Undo the cable and adjust the top (I think!) one first. Slacken it until the chain drops down to the smallest sprocket. Now reattach the cable and change down through the gears into the biggest sprocket. Tighten the other screw to avoid it going over the top. Now use the barrel adjuster to fine tune the shifting.

I'm sure those quicker at typing have answered befor me!

Thats what I love about this site .....

Straight forward and to the point instead of 10 pages of repair book head scratchiing !! :D

Thank you

jonnyboy666 what a man ..... 10 mins and all is clicky click !! :D

The chain skipping turned out to be bent teeth on the lower pulley

Ok, my last question, I do believe that a 9 speed cassette fits onto a 8 speed hub?

Well I have done this and all seems well but to me the chain looks VERY close to the frame/mech hanger. It doesnt touch but its a nats whisker?

Posted some pics let me know what you think?
