little m for metres.

Meters gained...the late great Sheldon will explain
It's normally referred to as development. Sheldon uses "gain ratio" to mean the reciprocal of mechanical advantage.

My M950 XTR rear mech has an official "max sprocket size" of 32t.

Has anyone managed to fit a bigger cassette (34t) on a mech with such limitation?
No problem.

Incidentally, Shimano now make a 9-speed 12-36 cassette. I've been thinking about using one to set up a low-geared 2x9 - probably something like 40 28 at the front.

Cheers. m of course, point taken.

In French we do call it "développement" too so I have no excuse!!

Is the 12-36 a heavy low-end job? TBF I acually need 11 so I am hoping for a 11-36 9-speed if I don't go 10-speed.

Are you saying my 950-GS rearmech will also cope with 36t????????? That would be great news.

The 12-36 is designated "HG61" which makes it SLX level. I haven't handled one, but it's mid-range quality - lightish, but not among the lightest.

You could make your own 11-36 - say 11 13 15 from an 11-34, then 18-up from the 12-36. Personally, I'd rather lose the 11 than have that 15-18 jump, but maybe there's a better way to go about it.

I'm not saying anything! It might, but you'd have to experiment. If going that route, I'd prefer a mid-cage derailleur to increase ground clearance. Shimano recommend the use of a new-style "shadow" mech.
