Re threading a Raleigh BB shell

Got a 3 speed Raleigh that needs to be turned into something more useful. Sheldon suggests that maybe it could have the BB threads re cut to something more universal eg British. Anyone done this with any success?

Tricky, you tend to run out of metal......could always cut and close the BB, file off some of the thread and start again. How about threadless?

Mavic do a thread less Bb and Phil Wood do Raleigh cups. So no need to re thread.

!!!!!! Have you seen the prices?
This is a "create yet another bike from spares " project not add to the overdraft.
Cheers though, its a thought.

Re:

There are second hand ones available if you look around
I have a mavic thread less one which I can give away free - but needs to be opened and serviced as its rough as a ninja - not sure what spindle length u need

Or you can get a Raleigh threaded bottom bracket for £16 brand new here :
Is that a Raleigh-threaded (26 tpi) bottom bracket, or just a Raleigh (branded) bottom bracket?

Re:

I had some success with getting a standard cartridge BB. I found even though the wrong tpi it would go quite a way in before binding so I just filed off enough of the thread so that it fitted flush. Then used I bit of locking compound and found it rode fine.
