Re chain for DA 7401 8 speed hyerglide cassette

I've got a couple of set ups, 6400 ultegra and 7400 dura ace. In both cases I have found it works ok with a new chain but perfectly with a period groupset matching chain.

Could you give me an idea which chains have worked well with your period groupsets? I really want to go with a chain that compliments the groupset? New chains are fine, convenient and easy, but if there are other options that will work better with the 7401 drive train then I'd prefer to go with that option.

Please dont muddy the waters, any quality chain designed for 7, 8 or 9spd will work very well. There is little to gain by trying to source some absurdly priced chain because its period correct.

Heres the 'original' CN HG-90

and heres a random Taya 8spd chain IT WILL BE FINE.

Not a case of trying to muddy the waters I was giving my experience and opinion which is ..... that when I have used a new current chain the shifting was ok. When I used an original Shimano chain it was perfect. Each to their own I guess.

I agree totally where paying crazy money for 'period correct' parts is concerned and I really do want to get as close to 100% out of the bike as I can. However, whether a chain is going to make that much difference I really don't know. The old DA gear is really quite clunk/click relative to modern parts and so there is more emphasis on efficiency rather necessarily than smoothness.

As Maca said, he found a period chain worked perfectly rather than just well and I can completely get my head round that. It seems that the main problem is that the period chains just aren't out there, that I can find anyway, so maybe it is simply down to experimenting and finding the best modern chain to work with your cassette.

Many thanks for the links, both are really helpful and both options seem to offer a good compromise between a period chain and a newer chain designed to work well with HG cassettes. I didn't realise I could look at 9 speed chains so that's really helpful.

Without trying to drag this thread on too long but are there any good replacement options for a 7401 cassette other than finding a NOS at a sensible price?

Thanks again for all the advice!!!!!! :)

cassettes?

just about anything 8spd from the last 25 years, Hyperglide hasnt changed at all.

until 2018 that is

Re:

FWIW, I always used sedis 8 speed chains back in the day, the shimano ones were a bit cr@p back then

As LGF has said, any 7, 8 or 9 speed chain will be fine. Just get one that you like the look of and is affordable. Personally I don't like silver/black, I prefer all silver... KMC do some decent ones (and they have them in gold too, similar to the old sedis ones :) )
