You probably want to take the steerer out too so you can get the crown nice and clean.
There's a retaining ring under the crown worth replacing after this many years.

Blades in, steerer out. Finding a replacement 1 inch retainer might not be so easy. I see there is 1 1/4 listed on eBay

Original one back in for now but not completely flush. I think will need a bit of black paint touch up on the top of one of the blades. Hopefully can find a a couple of 531 stickers. I think will keep the retro shimano stickers on

Nice job. How did you ensure the legs are straight? I had to put my Gatorblades back together, but those are built in such a way as to align when you bolt the legs in.

Thanks so much for everyone’s help with this. These are going to go back on a Roberts white spider that’s been in the garage for 15 years. I thought we would end up selling it but not so sure now we’ve started on it

I am certain there is, but this is what I did too. Paul Brodie was kind enough to guide me through it and he said it was OK, so it was definitely good enough for me.

Err you do realise the legs are in the wrong way round?. The picture with the wheel shows the canti bosses to the outside. They should be to the inside, closest to the rim.

Edit - But in another picture they are correct so maybe you spotted the error.

You can get dropout alignment tools but they are expensive so best to get you local shop to do it. Personally I use a hub as well to set the legs.
