Back in 1978, when I started full time work, the first thing I wanted to buy was a new racing bike. I went to my local dealer, Brownings in Chalkwell, Essex and gazed longingly at the Mercians he had in stock. Unfortunately they were all well out of my price range, so I settled on one of the lower priced Peugeots he also stocked.
Although I loved my first Peugeot, and the next one I replaced it with, It's always been a dream to own a Mercian, so when a grotty looking Red Campionissimo Frame and Forks appeared on eBay for £79 BIN I snapped it up.
I love patina on an old frame, so although it may be restored one day, for now it's got what I like to call RatroRacer style, totally untouched frame and forks kitted out with quality kit of an approximately similar age.
Luckily I have accumulated a lot of late '70's/early 80's Campagnolo kit and while the best of it is destined for my 1980 Alan Super Record I had enough spare to fit on the Mercian. So, a quick clean up and a day's fitting up has resulted in....
