I bought this one as the rear dropouts and wishbone look to be exactly the same as the X-Lite branded frame of the same era so I was pretty sure it wasn't "just" a Torus (not that there is anything wrong with them).

It arrived today and is very nice indeed.

The X-Lite advert in my June '96 edition of MTB Pro claims Reynolds created the wishbone and tapered and swaged chainstays. It also claims that it is "Made in England", which I'm not sure is quite true as it later states "Hand Finished and Detailed in our UK Factory" which sounds more likely to me. The 1997 brochure shows a 3/2.5 decal on the frame as well.

I'm trying to find out a bit more info on the frame spec and likely history but no joy with my www. searches so far. If anyone can ahed any more light I'd be grateful. The X-Lite info I can find is from 1996/7 but this frame seems to be earlier to me (I'd guess 1994/5) based on the mainly M900 kit and (original) skinny, but aheadset, rigid forks.

Thanks in advance.

Re:

Cool thanks for the brochure. I'd seen that on here earlier but missed the photo in the top right hand corner with the rear canti hanger.

Has anyone seen this frame in an earlier brochure?

The decals say "Team Raleigh" so I'm wondering if that was just some common marketing speak or whether it may have been the type of frame the team riders used. I'll have to check out some later archive photos of Team Raleigh as al the '93/4 ones I've looked at so far have them on the yellow and blue painted Steel frames

This is Barrie Clark’s race bike
I don’t think these were sold in this livery

As you can see the finish in this is quite different - but it’s the same frame.
Whether it’s a build to order liveried as a race bike, or a genuine race bike - only the guys on the Dynatech appreciation thread may be able to tell you - unfortunately most of the knowledgeable guys especially Steve (bikemeister2000) who was product design manager at Raleigh RSP don’t come on retrobike anymore and others have long retired or moved to, most likely, social media, but if anywhere it’ll be there - trawl through the 250 odd pages for some fascinating insights. Re:

Brill thanks ibbz, I’ll take a look through that

I’m guilty like many of completely ignoring the Raleigh brand, both in the day and now.

I’ve often quite fancied the X-Lite frame, and have failed to buy one a coupe of time which is why I bought this Raleigh tbh as they look very similar to me. I would not be at all surprised to find they are very closely related, if not exactly the same given the close relationship between the two companies (loads of X-Lite parts were used on the race bike, including the Double clamp fork - which I might like to fit to this if it’s appropriate)

However, now I’ve got something that I’m not familiar with that may have an interesting “Team” history (if only in replica status) I’m actually quite excited about the prospect of building a Raleigh Race Team homage bike.
