The Number Of The Beast
Hi chaps,

Can anybody tell me the correct tyre size for the 1980s Raleigh record ace?

Is it 27x1/4?

would a 700c wheel fit?

thanks
Neil

Below is the 1982 specs I think........the RRA has 27 X 1/4 according to the list. 700c will fit but IIRC the diameter is 4mm smaller.

Re:

Depends on the year.

I have a dark brown '86 record Ace which is 700c, the older ones (a light green IIRC) I'm pretty sure were 27"

Re:

They were still 27 x 1 1/4 in 1983 ("ice green" colour frame) and had generous clearance for mudguards so already used quite long reach Weinmann brake calipers (605s) with those rims. Having said that, I think there was just enough reach left in the brakes to use 700c wheels (see attached pic with 27" rims).
As said above, they went over to 700c some time in the mid-80s, but I'm not sure when.
You can tell the age of the frame from the frame number under the bottom bracket.
