Raleigh MTrax - Finished!

Looks smart, but not sure whether I'd query them re the flecks of old paint...they shouldn't be there really and although I could definitely live with it as is I'd hope they'd offer a solution one way or another. Personally I'd hope for a small discount.

Did they know what to do re masking up or did you have to explain?

Edges of e.g. seat tube are where you can tell the difference between a brilliant job and a so so one. I used to love the jobs done by Armourtex back when they were still a family business, so neat. Other jobs I've seen needed some time with a file and or taps before building up.

To be fair if I was travelling into Exeter more regularly as I did pre-Rona I’d have had a word. I’ll sort it when I’m short of bike fettling :)

I did give them a drawing with my masking requirement but I think this isn’t their first rodeo. Most of their work seems to be motorbike and motoX frames so some things are similar.

Update:

Fitted a new Ritchey Headset and got myself a rolling chassis.

Shimano UN52 bottom bracket that came with the bike was just cleaned up and refitted.

I've got some new wheels as wanted to run 8 speed as had a few Shimano Alivio/Accra parts lurking off an old Kona Stuff. Whilst they might not be as nice original as the shimano STX/ Alesa combo they are at least double walled and 8speed compatible. Plus 25 years of braking meant the original rims are long past the wear indicator.

Now sorting a chainring as was intending on using the existing triple chainring but the teeth on all but the big ring are toast. Plus 1x builds bigger thighs right.... :p

All built up and finished..

Didn't get many pictures of the building process as was done Ad Hoc in the front room while waiting for parts to arrive.

Surprisingly comfortable riding position using a narrow ish riser bar.

Looking forward to giving it a shakedown this weekend..

It’s been almost a year so thought I’d give an update:

1) Only one change since the initial build which is a set of larger rise bars (35mm rise, 9 deg sweep). This is just to help my back

2) Rear wheel hasn’t stood up to the abuse that well.. regular truing and spoke tension checks needed. Front is pretty bombproof still.

3) Cantilevers are imbued with a vengeful spirit that wants you to clip a tree 😂

Using it for gravel miles and the odd singletrack shred. It has shown up some poorly ridden e-bikes on smoother trails cos if you can’t stop you can’t help carry corner speed 😂
