Raleigh Dyna-Tech Pro

Of course, yes. I was having a bit of a senior moment there!
The tube is incredibly fine; I’ve never seen a seat tube as thin as that before. To be honest I think my down tube was slightly thicker on the ends than that so was possibly butted after all then.
Found this mentioned shims were used. ..

On this frame for sale on Hillary's site says it's plain gauge throughout.

Possibly something to do with some epoxy adhesives containing asbestos? I used to work in the aircraft industry using Ceba Geigy Redux, in the 1980s it was superseded by a non-asbestos version. Just guessing. I'll try and find out more if I see the guy again.

I think if you studied most epoxy formulations you would think twice about how you handled them. I see all the expoxy pours and subsequent sanding etc. on YouTube and a shiver runs down my spine. At least in reputable manufacture nowadays there are considered control measures with such exposure.

Interesting, thanks. The info from Hilary fits with my initial thoughts/observations.
One thing I can say for certain is there was no ‘step’ change in thickness on my downtube (as seen in illustrations of butted tubes). If there was any butting it was gradual.

As Hillary states that there is no need for butt's as the thicker alloy lugs do the same role.

Yep. If that’s the case then Raleigh’s statements need to be taken with a pinch of salt. No great surprise within the industry.

Sure, but as we’ve seen some evidence and information suggests otherwise. Perhaps only some tubes are butted. Or maybe Raleigh ‘reserved their right to change specifications without notice’…

To be honest it makes little difference to me if it is or it isn’t. I’m not small or light enough to notice any difference other than maybe when it’s something that’s a boat anchor made of gas pipe!

well if it‘s plain gauge it’ll be lighter, not heavier as it hasn’t needed reinforced ends, thanks to the Dynatech process
- less is more betterer innit 😁
