All from supernovae explosions, after a chain of fusion reactions converted hydrogen and helium into progressively heavier elements.
We are all made of stars, even our retrobikes.

What's interesting is carbon is made in different (less massive) types of stars than iron or titanium (massive stars which go supernova).

And FWIW many grades of stainless are non-magnetic, and they are still mostly iron........
How come, after forging a stainless spoke with a camping stove for some fiddle or fettle, it went rusty...what's happening there?

No idea!
Though a quick google suggests a chemical reaction between the chromium and carbon causing something called sensitization could be one option. Or it could be contamination from additives in the fuel (sulphates?) or the fuel itself attacking the oxide layer on the stainless.

I've got the chance of buying one in nearly original spec.

Not sure if I should buy with my head or heart. Head says I don't need it, heart is saying...go on relive your youth.
