Devout Dirtbag
Hello
Have acquired a machine that appears to be a 1950 Raleigh Clubman. There's a four speed 1951 hub, SA axle nuts, fancy lugs, pinch bolt stem and so on. The frame has been crudely repainted at some point but using the online Clubman checklist I've dated it to 1950 as the cable pulley wheel is not a braze-on. The main issue is that the handlebars are North Road type, not drops. The front Dynohub (working) is also a later addition. Question: 1) Is it a Raleigh Clubman? 2) If so did Raleigh make Clubmans with swept back handlebars like these ones? 3) For a restoration what is the nearest available paint spray to Raleigh's polychromatic green?
Thank you

From what I can see the paint looks original. The chainwheel is not.
From memory I think these had a detachable chainring on forged cranks.

Re:

Thank you. Another problem is that the 'decals' are also painted on. There also seems to be another lighter shade of green under the surface green so I still think its been badly painted. In places the paint has rubbed back to the bare metal.

Re:

That blue clubman has wrong top tube cable clips, wrong (GB) handlebar stem. And the paint is about 10 times thicker than original.
I think the chainset was made by Nicklin, with a special raleigh detachable chainring, not Williams.

Peter Kohler is good on catalogue details.

Keith.

Further to the blue clubman above, it would have had silver cables, and rubber handlebar grips. Also it looks like 27 inch wheels, if so totally wrong for 1949/50.
