Raleigh brake bosses on backwards?

I just bought some Deore LX canti's to fit on an old Raleigh MTB (ATB?) frame. But, when I went to put on the rears I saw that the holes that accept the brake spring are on the outside of the brake stud, rather than the inside. Is this common? Do any brakes work with this?

Are you sure they are canty bosses and not u-brake bosses? They would be at different locations on the stays and the brake would not line up with the rims. I suppose it's possible that there may have been some cantilever with a different spring that would have required the hole in a different location on the brake stud.

even U brake bosses have the holes on inside..we need pics,i have never ever ever heard or seen this before..but willing to be proved wrong :)

Are they removable bosses? I've seen a couple of frames where the spring holes are in a separate plate from the brake boss itself. Obviously it's possible to fit the plate in the wrong place if someone doesn't know what they're doing.

That said Raleigh ones are usually welded/bonded on. You could use something like XC Pro/Dia Compe cantis that don't use the spring hole if that's the case.

some suspension forks had there canti spring hole plates are sepearate

I've seen a couple of old French touring bikes that used this style of brake boss.

If the post and thread are of standard dimensions, your best bet is probably to use one of the designs of canti that doesn't make use of the spring hole. Dia Compe 986 is one example. SunTour Superbe Pro is another.

They're definitely permanently attached and put that way on purpose. What other kinds of brakes will work? Does anyone want to trade a pair of Dia-compe 986's for some Deore LX's? :p
