Raleigh 1987 Type 8802

Retro Newbie
Hi guys,

Just got a Raleigh Type 8802 with 531c tubing.

Newbie questions here:

1. Does anyone know what type of headset to replace on the 8802? can I use a dura ace Headset 7410
2. Can I use a threadless stem adapter instead of a quill stem for this frameset?
3. I believe the spacing is 125mm, modern wheels require 130mm, is there a safe way to cold set this frame? And does it affect the alignment of the rear derailleur?
4. Does STI shifter compatibility interact with placement on a 26mm handlebar as opposed to a 31.8mm?

I have attached the Raleigh 1987 lightweights catalogue with reference to this frame: http://veterancycleclublibrary.org.uk/n ... %20Library).pdf

Hi and welcome to Retrobike.

Your frame and forks should be 1 inch but before you get a headset, you need to check the fork crown race size which may be either 26.4 or 27.0 - it all depends on how it has been cut in the past. If you bought a 7410 headset with a 27.0 crown race, it isn't going to fit a fork cut for 26.4

You also need to check if you have enough fork steerer to fit a 7410 headset. These have a slightly higher stack height than older Shimano so you just need to measure up first.

Once a 1 inch threaded headset is fitted then you shouldn't have any problems using a quill adapter

531 can be safely cold set to 130mm. Once it is cold set you will need to make sure that the rear dropouts are parallel - cold setting shouldn't affect rear mech alingment.

The 26/31.8 is the stem/bar clamp diameter and shouldn't affect using any type of STI lever.

Hope that helps a little

Cheers
Neil

Re:

Thanks for the reply.

Frame was safely coldset by a local frame builder.

Do you have any advice on what type of bottom bracket to use? I need to place a modern crankset (105 11sp).

Check out this thread for fitting new parts on an old frame.

Just bare in mind that its only very recently that standards have started to chang so much that parts wont fit. Just about any frame from the last 40 years can be fitted with a modern groupset as long as the threading isnt anything too outlandish.

a Shimano UN55 cartridge bottom bracket will do the trick. You'll need the right tool (or get your local bike shop to do it for a fiver) but it's a simple job and you can pick them up pretty cheaply at Chainreaction
