Quill stem to threadless - Alpinestars resto

Falkster

Devout Dirtbag
Hi all - I’m just about to start my Alpinestars CroMega DX resto and I know I’ll be needing a stem as it had a crack in it last time I rode it (app 25 years ago).
It has a 1 1/4 stem and as these are hard to come by how easy is it to convert to threadless and what parts would I need?
Great site btw - my misses is going nuts as I’ve been immersed for the last couple of days.

Re: Quill stem to threadless

Why not ask for a 1 1/4 quill stem?

Theres loads on this site.

I have a few depending on size required but I'm sure others will have the size you need.

Good point - what do you have? I’m easy on size as long as it’s zero rise.

Re: Quill stem to threadless

You'd need a 1"1/4 to 1"1/8 quill to ahead stem adapter (not seen too many of those about either).

I think your best/simplest bet is to find another 1"1/4 quill stem.

Re: Quill stem to threadless

I definitely have a Zoom zero-rise 135mm stem that'll fit your bike (see below). You can have it for nowt, gratis, if you want it, just pay me the postage. (Same as photo below)

I have a a couple of other 1¼" stems, but can't remember what they are. I definitely don't have any Alpinestars branded ones left though.

Re: Quill stem to threadless

Oh, and by the way, you can't use the original Alpinestars handlebars in a non-Alpinstars stem, as they used oversized bulges. (Pardon the term ) So if you take the Zoom stem, you're going to need new bars.

Re:

There are 1.1/4 thread less headsets, these are light alloy with sealed bearings, but your fork tube won't be long enough.

Re:

I am doing a al-mega and the head was cracked so welded it up then sleeved it down to 1/8th am using project 2 forks threadless in mine

How will that affect the forks? Can I still use the 1 1/4 ones that are on it currently?
