question about chains..

maybe a silly one, but as in keeping with the retro bike feel, how likely is it to get hold of a retro chain, is this something most people don't fuss over and just to buy a good modern chain is important, as i want to ride this retro mtb a lot. I'm going to be running a 7 speed shimano cassett, with deore XT rear and front mechs, and a Deore Crank. Is it possible to get a retro deore chain or is this very unlikely, or am i being an idiot!

I suggest you fit a new modern chain and if anybody ever notices and accuses you of not having a retro chain, report them to your local mental health services, as they may be in need of help.

9-speed will work fine, but you can still buy 7/8-speed if you want to be a purist.

indeed. chain should be considered a consumable. next you'll be asking where you can buy some air from 1998 to fill your tyres with.

Those big sales that are often in sports centres are usually a good source of slightly older (new) chains. You see them advertised in Cycling weekly.
