Reckon you could have this thing single speeded for the price of that front brake.

It wasn't my intention to pee on anyone's bonfire or upset anyone. Maybe it's a kneejerk reaction coming from umpteen years in the bike trade. But over the years I've seen too many people spend too much money on bikes that weren't worth it. I've even done it myself and I know how it feels to admit defeat on a project that is just too much work.

Road bikes have a much longer history than MTBs and there are so many more compatibility issues to fall foul of. Unless you really know what you're doing - and it's implicit in the original posting that you are in doubt - then it's best to stay out of the minefield.

Keep both brakes & you don't even need a lock ring. Probably have to re-dish the wheel though. I've done it with cheap wheels & managed to get the cog so tight I could skid with impunity.
Try fixed you'll love it (possibly).
