Update
Since the last update I’ve managed to get the bike onto its wheels. It’s not yet finished but it well on its’ way to completion.
The first job was to press in the headset.. I’ve used a Shimano Deore XT M737 1 ¼” headset, but as the satin black and XT group aren’t in keeping with this build I’ve painted the top and bottom cups gloss black to match the colour scheme and hide the Deore XT logo.
The seat post clamp, rear canti hanger and seat clamp bolt were then positioned. The clamp is a standard alpinestars part, as is the canti hanger, these have both been powder coated in gloss black. The clamp bolt is a steel Brand X part, a cheap part that functions just as well as an expensive one.
With the seat post clamp in position the seat post shim, seat post and saddle could be installed. The shim is a USE thermoplastic shim that shims the 25.0mm post into the 30.0mm seat tube of the cro-mega. The saddle is a mid nineties titanium Flite with fluro kevlar corners. I love the look of a USE post with a Flite, looks just right to me.
The bars and stem slotted in nicely to give this bike a stunning look. The bars and stem are one of my favourite parts of this bike. The eagle eyed amongst you will also note the wheels are now on also.
The wheels are Shimano Deore LX M563 Parallax hubbed, DT spokes and Mavic 231 rims. They are in need of a bit of a clean but are in great condition. For tyres I’ve gone with steel bead skin walls in the form of Panaracer Smoke and Darts. I usually don’t run tyres bigger than 1.9” but as I ran 2.1” tyres BiTD I thought I’d give these a go.
The front mech has been loosely fitted, it will require positioning once the chainset is fitted. The ‘93 LX is looking great as a contrast to the ‘wildthing’ colour scheme of the frame.
The rear mech has been bolted into position too. The cassette shown on the rear wheel won’t be used. I had thought about using the cassette shown with a matching old chain, but thought it better to treat it to a new chain and cassette.
The cro-mega frame has mounting points for 2 bottle cages and racks front and rear. These have been blanked with Brand X black anodised aluminium M5 bolts.
So that’s where we are up to with this build. Next job will be fitting the brakes and cabling everything up. Hopefully the postman will have delivered me a new KMC 7 speed chain and a SRAM 7 speed 12-32 cassette, I’m also waiting on a new Shimano UN-54 68x113mm bottom bracket which is also in the post.
Apologises that the photos throughout the rest of the thread aren’t working at the moment, seems Photobucket are having problems, hence I’ve used Flicker for this update.
