Project Kona ....

Top work mate that frame will look really good when you've finished it and that fairy liquid with the wet n dry paper probably helps to to make the wet n dry more plyable too .

I'm loving this thread!

A lot of work involved, and I'm learning new techniques too! Especially painting - those forks look amazing! - and the washing up liquid for wet and dry paper.
I may invest in a Dremel at some stage, as it takes an age to polish up cranks by hand! They come up well though, just takes for ever!

Looking forward to updates!

Where do you do the spraying? Have you got a workshop?

Years ago, I sprayed a frame in my kitchen  Thought I was being careful having a dust sheet behind it. Til I saw the paint 'dust' all over the kitchen !  Lesson learnt!

Mike

Given me a buzz to hear you learned something from this thread :D it's cool to give something back when I have learned so much from here. The forks yeah, I'm quite pleased with the results I'd wondered if the paint might have shrunk back ... But so far so good
They were painted outside in absolutely perfect weather conditions the frame will be painted in my garage .. Hung from the roof. Pmsl at you spraying in the house !!! Bet that went down well !

Re:

Just trying to decide what colour cables to order. Splash of colour with yellow or blue or play it safe with black !?

I was single at the time! IIRC I got a mate in the car body repair trade to clear coat it.
Black cables I think. I'll keep the paint manufacturer in mind should I try again. I have a garage now too !
Who stocks it mate?

Can't wait to see it finished !

Cheers Mike :D

postman called with my ebay swag... makes a change to receive an ebay purchase to find the item better than it looked in the add

was well packed too :D

Refined the seat post clamp a bit....

So this is how it looked after a caustic soda bath ...

Anodizing 90 percent cleared but still a hint of green remaining. i didnt want to risk further caustic dipping as i feared it may have started eating into the splines. Pitting marks on the top side clamp .... pretty certain they weren't there originally. First attack with wet n dry, as always used wet with a shot of washing up liquid to stop the paper clogging.....

side ...

bit smoother ...

final rub with 1500 grade ...

Break out the Dremel ....

Finished. Not perfect but they'll do.

Re:

Rear mech clean up time ...

STX RC on donor bike :( ....

Its been a while then

After Initial clean with paraffin ...

Badge remeoved for deeper cleaning. Hopefully ill be be able to re-apply...

Autosol, fine wire wool and polishing wheel on Dremel ...

Poorboys alloy wheel sealer should keep the surface bright.

Just need to need to remove the corrosion from the cage, treat for rust and repaint ...

Re:

You should consider complete disassemble and regrease

Nice work in any case.

You should do some guides mate. Rather than all this info being buried into what will be one massive thread by the end ;)
