Project 1980's Scapin Sprint

Thought I would share the progress of my first retro bike build with you guys.

So I have bought a 1984/5 Scapin Sprint frame and forks from another RB forum member (Thanks again btw!) which is destined to be hung with the campag parts salvaged from another bike.

The paint job on the Scapin, although weirdly cool, had got to go in favour of a more classy metallic red picked out at my local auto-paint supplies. This isn't the original colour scheme (sorry purists) but without the funds to pay a specialist to replicate it I'm going for something as similar as I can achieve myself. I think it will do it justice.

First stumbling block: a VERY fixed bottom bracket cup. After two days of penetrating oil, tapping, vices and elbow grease I have decided to leave it in and mask it off for painting. A shame but I dont want to damage the frame.

Next step stripping. Two days of Nitromors, wire brush, steel wool and finally Dremel (wire brush attachment) were all worth it to see naked steel!

Painting to come: stay posted!

most of the time i favour the original paint, but in this case i dont blame you !
i got a dremmel some where, was getting nearly redundant as the blue tack so thanks
for the tip.

I'm definitely watching this project. I'm still hoping to pick up a Scapin road bike for myself one day.

I agree with stripping the original paint in this instance! Metallic red should look great.

Did you try the Sheldon Brown method of using a large diameter bolt on the fixed cup? I've had that work on fixed cups that resisted other methods. I've also managed to shear the threads of an M12 bolt trying it on my 1991 Karokoram Elite, but on that occasion I had the nut welded to the cup and it then came out (eventually) using a Stilson. Dan used the same approach with my Raleigh Twenty and that did the trick too - discoloured the paintwork a bit, but it was going to be powdercoated anyway.

hi, i think im with you on the cup removal ? as threads on each side of the bb shell[italian] are right handed a simple nut and bolt and socket through the inside of the shell and turn clockwise.increase leveridge on the socket with torque wrench or pipe.cant see it failing, especially if its welded ;)

Re:

the 'Sheldon' method of threading a bolt through the cup and tightening it as a way of loosening the bb cup only works on an English style bb with a left hand thread on the fixed cup (as you tighten the standard right hand thread bolt it works to loosed the left hand thread on the cup) it won't work on an italian BB. As I'm not replacing the BB I'm not too bothered I think I have done a good job of masking.

Has anyone got any tips on the painting of engraved lettering on the frame? The 'Scapin' on the the top of the seat stays, where the meet the top tube, is proving really quite difficult. I tried to mask the letters off and use fast dry enamel but this failed and I'm going to have to strip back and start again on these sections (see pic). I don't think the lettering needs to be masked off, I will just paint over a top coat before lacquer this time. I will also use a different paint! Any suggestions?

you tried to mask off the lettering ? you adventurous chip off the old block! could have done with you in colditz ! what diameter magnifying glass have you got 2ft ? :D please excuse the banter cause ive thought about it myself changing the paint in my engraving on the top of my bb shell from black to white, its just a thought after its painted... what about sharpening a wax crayon to the raised area as a mask film in itself. after the enamell or what ever has dried, rub a lolly pop stick as a chisel.its got to work provided the intended engraving was cleaned [solvent]

Hello All

The happy day has arrived that I can finally say the Scapin, my first ever bike build, is finished!

It rides like a bloody dream! Not far of the pace of my modern alu Specialised Allez but more involving!
