Profiteering

Well said.

If I ran a business involving and dealing in retro/old/classic bike's and parts I would happily pay to advertise, but only if other people who clearly advertise in there avatar/sig/post's/"build" threads etc also had the decency to contribute.

And using a 3rd party "ghost" buyer is really low :?

I had no idea there were any companies on here, which just shows how naive I am to it, I guess. And yes, using 3rd party buyers is a bit low. Isn't obtaining something by deception a crime, anyway?

Re:

I find it hard.
To get excited by a handful of individuals applying time and effort to turn a profit from push bikes. No-one is compelled to sell nor to buy.
For me, this site is about nostalgia. You can't beat rose tinted spectacle wearers for a profit making opportunity.
Whoever decided hippies should make no money forgot to tell the Beatles, Floyd and the rest..

FMJ, best you steer clear of the most blatant profiteer RBUK member who's local to us in the GTA area. :p

Ever been on a VW camper forum. No? Visit one and take a look at the forsale section

Another member raised the issue of cleaning, polishing and restoring then inflating the bought price to reflect the work carried out and the member poo poo'd the idea.
Take a look at VW renovation threads or car, motorbike, van camper, boat etc etc etc
Here is the evidence it cost X amount.
Here is the finshed camper and its now worth 10 times as much
But this is unacceptable if its a set of cranks or brakes or anything.

That's different than just flipping it for a quick profit though. By doing a bit of restoration you are adding value to the car plus the time you spent working on it. If a member on here buys a frame and then sends it of for a respray and new stickers then he is perfectly entitled to sell it on for what it owes him plus a bit extra for the time spent sorting it. Its all about adding value.

Then you have people such as the bloke on here who offered me £50 for an item I was selling for £80. I told him £70 was as low as I'd go so he sent me a sob story about how he was skint that month and this was the last part to finish the build blah blah. He ended up paying the £70, I posted it on a Thursday and it was up on STW on Saturday afternoon for £95. I checked his profile and sure enough, the vast majority of his posts were for sale ad's or "pm sent" in reply to other ad's. I struggle to see how people like this add value to the community / forum...

Wow, that's crap.

I had someone get irate with me over PM because they thought i'd priced a part too high, they low balled me and then told me to clear off to ebay as my sort wasn't welcome here (i've been a member twice as long as they had and don't really sell that much) as I wouldn't accept the offer.
The fact was that I'd bought a bike cheap and taken a punt as it was badly pictured and badly measured, I spent 2 hours driving to collect it, it didn't fit and was in a right state. I spent time stripping it cleaning, servicing and polishing all the parts and cleaned the rust off the paint with Oxalic acid, W&D and cutting compound. Most flippers just strip the bike and list the parts without even cleaning it, yes I got more than I paid but I have put in a good few hours to make it tidy, presentable and fully functional. I won't be making a habit of it though I don't think as the returns don't outweigh the time spent.

Had the same sort of PM from someone I offered a NOS Ti railed <insert Italian brand name here> seat at a reasonable price. Had a good laugh when I saw his for sale ad a month later with a used generic steel railed <insert Taiwan brand name here> seat for twice the price I offered him my seat for. Apparently the steeper price was because it had a Yeti logo on it, and was RARE.

might this be an example of what you are referring to FMJ.
someone poach these off you `for a build'.

Apparently this thread is at a point were people just get to make accusations and a respectful PM is not enough to get someone to delete their post. The internet is a wonderful thing.

I want no part of this thread. I find the hypocrisy of it nauseating.

Those NukeProof Skewers are mine. They were not bought, traded, stolen, or bamboozled out of FMJ.

Re:
