Hey Y’All,

I’ve been out of the retro game for a while now but have made a start on pulling a long overdue build together.

I have a NOS M730 BB for the build that I opened the tape on the box off last night ☺️

The grease in the cups and on the bearings (in their pot) is still supple but I plan to degrease everything and repacking before installing.

Grease wise I have a couple of options in the garage but is there a “go to” grease for an open BB?

All advise most welcome 🤗

I´m sure some may have preferences, but every bearing grease for low speed applications should be ok. I use the automotive stuff from Ate I have here, the Shimano grease, if not 30 yrs old, is also fine. If I would know I´d had to do a lot of rides in the rain (commuting for instance) I´d probably try the white stuff with Teflon as it supposed to have anti corrosive properties and is a bit thicker.

I have also used the same can of automotive bearing grease for the past 10 years. Also without any problems. I'm sure there are bike mechanics out there ready to lecture people such as myself as to why this is wrong. Oh well...

Speaking as a professional, I can safely say that
any lubrication is better than none at all.

The difference in lubricant properties is a lot less varied than the opinions expressed thereon🤣

Keep on greasing👍
