probably been done before but....... helmets? yes or no?

show me a helmet that'll fit my 63cm frankenhead, and ill buy it.

till that day, my head rides naked.

honestly, think of a person with a silly hat on. multiply by 7.5, and youre knowhere near how daft I look with a lid perched on top of my bonce.

''not as daft as with your head cracked open and brains dribbling out'' I hear you say...

I usually wear one if I'm going for a proper ride with others wearing them, but not when I'm using the bike for transport. I've yet to find one that doesn't look a bit odd when wearing it and feel a little self concious when I'm out on my own.
That's as bad as a mate of mine who "doesn't like to ride through town in his mountain biking gear" .
I just tell him to MTFU and get over it - who's bothered anyway, it's not like you've just landed from Mars.
I'd wheelie one- handed all the way down the main street if I could (I can't manage more than a few metres though, but it doesn't stop me trying..... ;) )

I've never actually hit my head in a spill, I always seem to get a hand down first, which is why I always wear gloves or mits, they've saved me quite a few shredded palms over the years. My elbows, forearms and jacket sleeves have been less fortunate. :D

The forecast calls for pain (broken collar bone, separated shoulder) it you land on an outstretched arm. Much better to try not to.

thanks for the views so far gents. I think i'm going to end up in the 'sometimes' camp - I'm not the greatest fan of hats at the best of times so i have a feeling a helmet will annoy the living daylights out of me BUT as I hopefully regain a bit of the balance, ability and confidence i had when i was a nipper I should hopefully feel a tad safer with a lid rather than without.

After a short time you don't really notice - it's more that you notice if you don't wear one ( the seat-belt analogy).
I can thoroughly recommend Giro Hex or Xen, great helmets (though especially bad for helmet hair, for some reason... ).

My shoulder was sore for a few days after the last tumble, but even so, I'll take any of the above over a full on face plant. :D

Funny thing is, I had a bad crash when I was a kid on a too big racer and had my head superglued in A&E. I learnt how to fall off better.

I don't (unless doing some serious downhill -and those days are long behind me...)

LGF. A valid point. How many people just stick a helmet on and don't think how to minimise risks/educate their children/learn to fall off better...

I'm not anti helmet to anyone who chooses to wear one just people who think they won't get hurt if they wear one!

I had the same problem... Went for the Giro Venti.
I think the hair pushes me just about too big for the larger of the regular sized helmets.

FWIW, I wear one but would not criticize anyone who decides to ride without one. Freedom of choice 'n all that.

I actually have three; Spesh Sub Zero for road, Bell for off-road and a Lidl one with a Hope Vision 2 headlight zip-tied onto it.

I usually say on road yes and off road no,Most of the places where I ride are flat and easy and nothing will fall on my head as there are not many trees.I did here a tail once about a man riding behind caldecot golf couse and a golf ball hit him on the head though  so may revise my opinion

Good job errant golf balls only hit cyclists on the head, though, and not, say, people walking, 'cos then, like, everybody would be at risk...

;-)

FORE! I'm playing through...
