Pre Malt Merlin UK or '93 CB Spectre

Objectively, what is the best frameset?

I currently have (owned from new) an early 90s ali Merlin UK frame (non disc) with Kona P2 forks but may be able to get a complete '93 CB Spectre with 531 Magnum.

Thinking of transferring the LX 9 speed from the Merlin to the CB.

It's very hard to say objectively which is the better frame, especially depending on your preference between steel and aluminium.

I've had a slightly later (653) version of that Spectre frame and I really liked it (unfortunately a little small for me), but my personal opinion would also be that putting an ugly 4-arm crankset on it would be sacrilege

The CB is a bit of a tank and not the nicest of rides

Many thanks for the input. I must admit I do have a soft spot for steel as I ride a custom 80s Columbus SLX racer built by Roberts and recently bought a '92 Schwinn 700c hybrid frameset made from DB True Temper for a gravel build (pic with wheels from the wife's Marin 29er for effect).

I really like my Merlin, it's light and have upgraded the components over time, but don't ride it hard.

I have always liked early steel MTBs (Orange, Roberts etc...). The CB aooears to be in great condition and is for sale for £50 and would have hoped the 531 Magnum frameset would have provided a nice ride.
